Description

Directions

Before starting your Lariam regimen, it's important to follow specific directions to ensure its optimal effectiveness. Lariam tablets should be taken with plenty of water, preferably after a meal. Dosage instructions differ based on whether Lariam is used for malaria prevention or treatment. For prevention, initiate the tablets 10 days before your departure and continue weekly doses throughout your stay, plus 4 weeks after returning. Malaria treatment dosages vary by weight and duration of exposure. Children's doses are adjusted according to their weight.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Lariam is mefloquine, which belongs to the class of antimalarial drugs. Mefloquine's mechanism of action involves targeting malaria parasites, preventing their growth and spread within the body. Its effectiveness is essential in combatting the diverse strains of malaria found in various regions. While mefloquine is the primary component, Lariam tablets also contain other ingredients like poloxamer, microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, maize starch, crospovidone, ammonium calcium alginate, talc, and magnesium stearate.

Side Effects

While Lariam's efficacy against malaria is crucial, it's essential to be aware of potential side effects that may arise. Common side effects include sleeping problems, dizziness, headache, vision issues, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach ache. However, some individuals may experience more serious side effects, including mental health concerns like depression, anxiety, hallucinations, and self-endangering behavior. If any symptoms are concerning, promptly consult your healthcare provider.

Warnings

Lariam may lead to severe mental problems in certain individuals. Serious symptoms, such as suicidal thoughts, paranoia, and abnormal behavior, should be immediately reported to your healthcare provider. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing conditions, such as epilepsy, heart problems, liver or kidney issues, or previous allergic reactions. In some cases, side effects like dizziness and balance problems may persist even after discontinuing Lariam. This emphasizes the importance of consistent communication with your healthcare provider.
Special Considerations for Pregnant Women and Breastfeeding:
Pregnant women should avoid Lariam due to potential risks to both the mother and the unborn child. Malaria prevention strategies should be explored that do not involve Lariam. Breastfeeding women should also avoid Lariam, and alternative measures should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
Driving and Using Machinery while Taking Lariam:
Lariam can potentially affect your ability to perform tasks requiring alertness, coordination, and spatial awareness, such as driving or operating machinery. If you experience dizziness, vertigo, or other balance-related issues, exercise caution and consult your healthcare provider before engaging in such activities.
Storing Lariam Properly:
Maintaining the integrity of Lariam tablets is crucial for their efficacy. Store Lariam below 30ºC, in a dry place, and away from the reach of children. Proper storage ensures that the medication remains effective throughout its shelf life.
Reporting Side Effects:
If you experience any side effects while taking Lariam, promptly communicate with your healthcare provider. Timely reporting not only helps address your concerns but also contributes to the overall understanding of the medication's safety profile.
