Medication details

Description

Wegovy is an MHRA licensed weight management treatment for adults in the UK. It contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic (semaglutide), made by the same manufacturer Novo Nordisk, but at higher doses and licensed specifically for weight loss rather than type 2 diabetes. In clinical trials, patients on the maintenance dose lost an average of around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks alongside a reduced calorie diet and more physical activity.

Is Wegovy right for you?
Wegovy is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above if you also have a weight related condition such as type 2 diabetes, raised blood pressure, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnoea. It works alongside lifestyle changes rather than instead of them, so you'll need to commit to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity to get the best from it. Our clinicians check your eligibility as part of your consultation.

How it works
Semaglutide is a GLP‑1 receptor agonist, which is a long way of saying it mimics one of the natural gut hormones your body releases after eating. By activating the GLP‑1 receptor, it reduces your appetite, slows how quickly your stomach empties, and helps you feel full sooner and for longer. The result is fewer cravings and smaller portions feeling enough, which makes the lifestyle side of weight loss much more manageable.

What the clinical evidence shows
Wegovy has been studied extensively through the STEP trial programme. Patients on the 2.4mg maintenance dose lost an average of around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks. More than eight in ten participants lost at least 5% of their starting weight, and many also saw improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar control. In a separate study of patients with type 2 diabetes, average weight loss was around 10% over the same period.

Your treatment with Rightangled
We're a regulated UK pharmacy and prescribing service, which means every Wegovy prescription is reviewed by one of our GMC registered clinicians, not by an algorithm. Most assessments are reviewed the same day. Your medication is dispensed from our GPhC registered pharmacy and arrives in discreet, temperature controlled packaging. Our clinical team is available throughout your treatment if anything comes up.

What's in the box
Wegovy comes as a pre filled FlexTouch pen containing four weekly doses, so one pen covers a month of treatment. The injection needles, the official patient information leaflet, and access to our clinical support team are all included.

Your dosing schedule
You'll start on a low dose so your body has time to adjust, and the dose increases gradually over the first 16 weeks. The standard schedule is 0.25mg once a week for the first four weeks, then 0.5mg, then 1mg, then 1.7mg, and finally 2.4mg as your ongoing maintenance dose from week 17 onwards. Each step lasts around four weeks. Your clinician may slow this down if you're struggling with side effects, or keep you on a lower dose if it's working well for you.

What to expect from side effects
The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, mild diarrhoea, constipation, and occasional vomiting. They're usually mild, tend to settle within a few weeks, and are most noticeable just after a dose increase. Eating smaller meals more often, easing off rich and fatty foods, and staying well hydrated makes a real difference for most patients.

When Wegovy isn't suitable
Wegovy isn't right for everyone. You shouldn't take it if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy in the next two months, or if you've had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide. It also isn't suitable if you have severe gastrointestinal disease, a history of pancreatitis, or if you're already on a similar medication such as Ozempic, Saxenda, or another GLP‑1. Our clinicians review your full medical history during your consultation to make sure it's safe for you.

Getting started
Start with our short online consultation. It takes around five minutes and asks about your health, medical history, and weight loss goals. One of our clinicians reviews your answers, usually within hours, and if Wegovy is suitable for you we'll dispense your prescription and send it out from our UK pharmacy with next day delivery available.

Wegovy or Mounjaro?
Both are excellent once weekly injections, but they aren't quite the same medication. Wegovy contains semaglutide and works on GLP‑1 alone, with an average weight loss of around 15% in trials. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and works on two hormones (GLP‑1 and GIP), with an average weight loss of 22.5%. Wegovy starts from £99.99 a month and Mounjaro from £164.99. Your clinician will help you decide which is the better fit for your goals, medical history, and budget.

Wegovy is a prescription only medicine regulated by the MHRA and must be prescribed after a proper medical assessment. For full prescribing information, please refer to the Summary of Product Characteristics on medicines.org.uk.

This service is provided by Rightangled in partnership with Medetone pharmacy, regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council and the Care Quality Commission. Wegovy® is a registered trademark of Novo Nordisk A/S.

Directions

Wegovy is a once weekly injection that goes just under the skin. Take it on the same day each week, at any time of day, with or without food.

You can inject into your stomach (keeping a few centimetres clear of the navel), the front of your thigh, or the back of your upper arm if someone else is helping you. Switch the spot you use each week so the skin doesn't get sore, and avoid anywhere that's bruised, red, or hardened.

Before each injection, check the solution through the window on the pen. It should be clear and colourless. If it looks cloudy or has anything floating in it, set that pen aside and don't use it. Wash your hands, attach a fresh needle, and clean the injection site with an alcohol wipe. Press the pen against your skin at a right angle, push the button, and hold it there until you hear the click that tells you the dose is in. Pop the needle into a sharps bin afterwards.

If you forget a dose and remember within five days, take it as soon as you can. If more than five days have passed, skip it and carry on with your next scheduled dose. Don't double up. You can change which day of the week you inject if you need to, as long as there's at least three days between doses.

For storage, keep unopened pens in the fridge between 2 and 8°C, in the original carton to protect from light. Don't freeze them. Once you've started using a pen, you can either keep it in the fridge or leave it at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 6 weeks. Keep the cap on between uses, and discard the pen 6 weeks after first use even if there are doses left.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Wegovy is semaglutide, a synthetic version of a natural gut hormone called GLP‑1 (glucagon‑like peptide‑1). Your body releases GLP‑1 whenever you eat, and it plays a key role in how hungry you feel, how full you feel after a meal, and how your blood sugar is regulated.

Semaglutide activates the same GLP‑1 receptors that your natural hormone would, but it stays in the body for much longer. That's why a single weekly injection is enough to keep appetite levels steady throughout the week. The result is reduced hunger, slower stomach emptying after meals, and a stronger sense of fullness, all of which make it easier to eat less without feeling deprived.

Side Effects

Most people get on well with Wegovy, especially if they follow the gradual dose schedule. Side effects are usually mild to moderate and tend to ease off within a few weeks as your body adjusts.

The most common side effects (more than 1 in 10 people) are digestive: nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, abdominal pain, and a reduced appetite (which is partly the point of the medication). They're most noticeable just after a dose increase and usually settle down within a week or two.

Less commonly (up to 1 in 10 people), some patients experience tiredness, dizziness, headaches, indigestion, bloating, gallstones, injection site reactions, or hair loss. Low blood sugar can occur, particularly if you're already on diabetes medication.

Serious side effects are rare but worth knowing about. Pancreatitis can cause severe stomach pain that may radiate to your back, and it needs urgent medical attention. Gallbladder issues sometimes occur, particularly with rapid weight loss. Severe allergic reactions and kidney problems are also possible. Very rarely, sudden visual disturbances or vision loss in one eye have been reported. If this happens, stop the injection and seek urgent medical advice straight away.

A few practical tips help with the most common side effects. Eat smaller meals more often, ease off rich and fatty foods, and stay well hydrated, especially if you've had any diarrhoea. Take your injection on a day you can rest if you tend to feel rough afterwards.

If side effects feel severe or aren't improving, get in touch with your Rightangled clinician. Don't stop treatment suddenly without speaking to us first.

Warnings

Wegovy isn't suitable for everyone, and there are some situations where it shouldn't be used at all. You shouldn't take it if you've previously had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide, if you're pregnant, while trying for a baby, or while breastfeeding. If you're planning a pregnancy, you'll need to stop Wegovy at least two months beforehand to allow it to clear from your system.

There are also conditions where Wegovy can be used, but you'll need to mention them in your consultation so we can prescribe safely. These include any history of pancreatitis, severe stomach emptying problems (gastroparesis), inflammatory bowel disease, diabetic eye disease, kidney or liver problems, gallstones, current use of insulin or other diabetes medications, an eating disorder, mental health conditions including depression, or any planned surgery in the near future. You shouldn't combine Wegovy with other GLP‑1 medications such as Ozempic, Saxenda, Victoza, or Mounjaro.

Wegovy can affect contraception, particularly oral contraceptives, in patients with a higher BMI. If you take the pill, your clinician may recommend adding a barrier method or switching to a non oral contraceptive while your dose is being adjusted.

It's sensible to be cautious with alcohol while you're on Wegovy. It can make low blood sugar more likely and tends to worsen any nausea you might be experiencing. Until you know how Wegovy affects you, take care driving or operating machinery, especially during the first few weeks and after each dose increase, since some patients feel dizzy or tired.

Throughout your treatment, your Rightangled clinician will keep an eye on how you're getting on. Get in touch straight away if you notice severe stomach pain, sudden vision changes, or signs of an allergic reaction such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

How quickly does Wegovy work for weight loss?

Most patients notice their appetite changing within the first few weeks, even on the starting 0.25mg dose. Real, measurable weight loss tends to follow soon after, and it picks up pace as you move through the dose increases.

As a rough guide, expect modest changes in the first few weeks while your body is adjusting, with steadier weight loss building from around weeks five to twelve as you move up to 0.5mg and 1mg. Most patients see the bulk of their results once they reach the 2.4mg maintenance dose. In clinical trials, patients on the maintenance dose lost an average of around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks.

That said, every patient is different. How quickly you lose weight depends on your starting weight, how closely you stick to the diet and activity changes, and how your body responds to the dose. Consistency matters far more than chasing a particular number on the scale.

Do I need a prescription for Wegovy in the UK?

Yes. Wegovy is a prescription only medicine in the UK, regulated by the MHRA, which means it can only be supplied after a proper clinical assessment by a registered prescriber.

With Rightangled, the process is straightforward. You complete a short online consultation (around five to ten minutes), one of our GMC registered clinicians reviews your answers (usually the same day), and if Wegovy is suitable for you we issue your prescription and dispatch it from our GPhC registered pharmacy with next day delivery available.

The assessment isn't a tick box exercise. It exists to make sure Wegovy is safe for you given your health history and any other medications you're taking. Be wary of any website offering Wegovy without a proper consultation. These are often unregulated, sometimes selling counterfeit products, and they're a real safety risk.

How is Wegovy administered and does it hurt?

Wegovy comes in a pre filled FlexTouch pen that you use yourself once a week. The needle is very fine and most patients say it feels more like a pinch than a proper injection. A lot of people compare it to a mosquito bite.

The pen does most of the work for you. Once you press it against your skin and click the button, it delivers the dose in a few seconds. You can inject into your stomach, the front of your thigh, or the back of your upper arm, and you switch the spot each week.

The first injection is always the one people are most nervous about. After that, it tends to become a quick weekly routine that takes less than a minute, including getting set up. Each pen contains four doses, so one pen lasts you a month.

How should I store Wegovy and what's the shelf life?

Storage matters because Wegovy is a biological medication and won't work properly if it gets too warm or freezes.

Before you start using a pen, keep it in the fridge between 2 and 8°C, in its original carton to protect it from light. Don't freeze it. Once you've started using a pen, you have a bit more flexibility: you can keep it in the fridge, or leave it at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 6 weeks. Either way, keep the cap on between uses.

Always glance at the solution before you inject. It should be clear and colourless. If anything looks off, set it aside. Discard the pen 6 weeks after you first used it, even if there are doses left.

If you're travelling, an insulated medical cool bag works well for getting the pen from A to B. Keep it out of direct sunlight and never leave it in a hot car. It's also worth carrying a copy of your prescription with you, especially if you're flying.
