Wegovy tablets are the first oral GLP‑1 medication approved for weight management in adults, made by the same manufacturer (Novo Nordisk) as the Wegovy injection. They contain semaglutide in tablet form, taken once a day, and offer a needle free option for patients who'd rather not inject. In clinical trials, patients on the 25mg maintenance dose lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, with full adherers losing closer to 16.6%.

Are you eligible?
Wegovy tablets are FDA approved for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above if you also have a weight related condition such as type 2 diabetes, raised blood pressure, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnea. How it works
Semaglutide is a GLP‑1 receptor agonist, which means it mimics one of the natural gut hormones your body releases after eating. By activating the GLP‑1 receptor, it reduces your appetite, slows how quickly your stomach empties, and helps you feel full sooner and for longer. The result is fewer cravings and smaller portions feeling enough.

Tablets or injection?
The oral and injectable versions of Wegovy contain the same active ingredient and work the same way in the body. The main differences are practical: tablets are taken daily and don't need refrigeration, while the injection is taken weekly and must be kept cold. Tablets also need to be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, and you'll need to wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medications. The injection has a slight edge on average weight loss in trials (around 15% versus around 14%), but for many patients the convenience of a daily tablet outweighs that difference.

What the clinical evidence shows
The OASIS trial programme studied oral semaglutide across thousands of participants. In OASIS 4, patients on the 25mg maintenance dose lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, rising to 16.6% among those who fully adhered to the treatment plan. One in three participants achieved 20% or greater weight loss. Many also saw improvements in waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Your dosing schedule
Wegovy tablets come in four strengths: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg. Treatment starts low and steps up gradually so your body has time to adjust. You'll begin on 1.5mg once daily, then move up to 4mg, then 9mg, and finally 25mg as your ongoing maintenance dose. Each step typically lasts four weeks. Your clinician may slow the pace if you're struggling with side effects or hold you on a lower dose if it's working well for you.

What to expect from side effects
The most common side effects are digestive: nausea, mild diarrhea, constipation, and occasional vomiting. They're usually mild, tend to settle within a few weeks, and are most noticeable just after a dose increase. Eating smaller meals more often and easing off rich, fatty foods makes a real difference for most patients.

When Wegovy tablets aren't suitable
Wegovy isn't right for everyone. You shouldn't take it if you or a close family member has a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, or if you've had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide. It also isn't safe during pregnancy, while trying for a baby, or while breastfeeding. You should stop treatment at least two months before trying to conceive. Tell our clinicians during your consultation if you have a history of pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney disease, diabetic eye disease, or take other diabetes medications.
